Kyle Williams: Buffalo Bills’ Renaissance Man

Fat guys still get no respect. Going into the final round of the American Century Golf Championship on Sunday, Kyle Williams is three points behind retired tennis star Mardy Fish. The golfing world must be just waking up to the notion that big guys can play golf just as well as better known names like Tony Romo, Patrick Mahomes and Jerry RIce.

When I mentioned to my spouse that I planned to watch golf on TV on Saturday, he had to check and make sure my body hadn’t been invaded by aliens. Normally I’d rather be poked with voodoo needles than be forced to sit down and watch golf on television. Golf is not my thing, but I was not going to miss a chance to watch our beloved big boy show the rest of the world what we already know.

Kyle Williams is the definition of a renaissance man.

We all remember the hilarious swimming contest between Kyle Williams and Marshawn Lynch.

Kyle’s done nothing but prove people wrong his entire life. One of the greatest memories I have of attending my first training camp at St. John Fisher College in Pittsford, N.Y. in 2006 was confusing rookies Kyle Williams with John McCargo during defensive line drills. My eyes had to be deceiving me that Williams was the fifth-round pick and McCargo was the first rounder.

Nope. Turns out even NFL draft gurus whiffed on correctly assessing Williams’ value in the NFL. Six Pro-Bowls later he remains disgruntled about being drafted in the fifth round. The knock that his arms were too short also stoked the flames.

BillsMafia was the beneficiary of the angry fat man for 13 seasons in the NFL. Now he’s set his sites on competing at golf. He lit the world on fire in 2019 when he finished tied for 12th overall in his first American Century Championship appearance.

So why should anyone be surprised to see Williams competing for the top spot on the leaderboard this year?

BillsMafia knows better than to underestimate Kyle Williams. Those who don’t know much about him will continue to ignore the big chubby guy who looks more like the Michelin Man than the stud athlete that he is.

However, nothing surprises BillsMafia about the big guy who just keeps breaking stereotypes wherever he goes. He is the the perfect representative for our FAMbase. Underestimate us at your peril.

Good luck in the final round, Kyle!

Editor’s babble: I was surprised how much I enjoyed watching Kyle and other golfers compete at Lake Tahoe. Let’s hope he brings home a championship! No one deserves it more :) You can find me on Twitter @RobynMundyWYO.
