Extraordinary times call for extraordinary measures

As Editor-in-Chief of the BillsMafia blog I have made the decision to include pertinent messages in the fight against COVID-19 to our blog. We will continue to wax poetic about our Buffalo Bills when we can, but also use our platform to pass along information and opinions we believe may help bring clarity to an increasingly alarming issue we are all facing today… and one which so far has been clouded with confusion and misinformation.

As a health care professional for over 45 years, the crisis we face with COVID-19 is unlike anything I’ve encountered during the course of my career. Not only because of its ultimate potential lethality… but because there are also some maladaptive behavioral tendencies by humans during times of crisis that we often display. This is especially true when we can’t visibly see or easily understand what we are up against.

For example, patriotism was in plentiful supply when the nation pulled together against a common enemy during 9/11. The enemy was clearly visible and consequences obvious for all to see as the Twin Towers fell to the ground. The aftermath was physically tangible. The data of the magnitude of the situation was plain for all to see.

COVID-19 is a virus. A small particle that invades our bodies and behaves in a predictable, albeit variable fashion. It is a novel cororonavirus, meaning humans have little or no immunity against it. And, because we missed our opportunity to collect reliable data, we have even less clarity with which to evaluate how this enemy within us might behave.

I also intend to focus some of my attention on the tendencies about how humans behave during crises and what each of us can do to support one another. The way people behave in times of crisis is somewhat predictable, so if we can better understand why we tend to respond in a variable manner to a similar threat, maybe we can reduce a little of the collective anxiety. At least that’s my goal for now.

  1. Thank you for providing this information. Even though I am a pretty well informed former health professional, it contains information that I was unaware of that directly applied to me, personally.

In addition to being over 65, I have four serious “underlying health issues”, one being a rare immune cell disorder and another that could require open-heart surgery if it gets much worse.

I know that I am at high risk, but I want to urge anyone who is over 50 to take this seriously. Stay informed, take the protective measures that the health professionals recommend, help your family members to protect themselves, try to rest eat as well as you can, and stay calm (you can help your immune system if you resist the urge to panic should it arise). It could be awhile before there is an effective treatment or vaccine for this and some restrictive measures may be necessary to help control the spread of this virus, so be prepared for this to be a long haul requiring some personal sacrifices. So be patient. Ultimately, we can and will get through this!

Hey, Bills Mafia, we have a team on the rise to live for! So, be informed, protect yourself, and stay healthy!

Robyn (many thanks to you again!) knows what she’s talking about, so pay attention to the information that she has and will be providing to you here about this virus.
