History of the Buffalo Bills’ Rookie Jersey Numbers

It took almost an entire week, but on Wednesday the Buffalo Bills announced what numbers their draft class will wear. The team only has one officially retired number, Jim Kelly’s #12. However, the team tries to avoid issuing numbers like 32 (OJ Simpson), 34 (Thurman Thomas), 78 (Bruce Smith) and 83 (Andre Reed).

Rosters are loaded with extra bodies this time of year, so there are fewer numbers to choose from for the incoming players… Here are their choices:

Sammy Watkins, WR – 14

Players who have worn it in at least one game (most recent first): Ryan Fitzpatrick (’09-’12), Frank Reich (’85-’94), Tom Sherman (’68), Tom O’Connell (’60-’61), M.C. Reynolds (’61)

Best player to wear the number: Ryan Fitzpatrick (Frank Reich might be the most memorable, though)

Relevant all-time stats: Fitzpatrick has two career receptions for -3 yards

Number notes: Watkins was picked in the 1st round at pick 4 in 2014. Born June 14th. Previously wore 7 and 2 (7 x 2 = 14). He’ll be the first non-QB to wear the number in a game.

Cyrus Kouandjio, OT – 71
