Bills Take to the Road after Last Minute Victory

Looking Back

The Bills got their first victory of the Doug Marrone era in dramatic fashion as EJ Manuel led his team down the field for the game winning touchdown. This may be the first of many come from behind victories for Manuel if he continues to show the kind of calmness under pressure that was on display for a sellout crowd. The #BillsMafia held a Tweet Up prior to the game in hammers lot and even fans from as far as California were in attendance for this one.

EJ Manuel had a solid performance the entire game but really picked it up when it mattered most. The running game and particularly CJ Spiller got it going and after 2 games the Bills are the #4 ranked rushing offense in the league.

Robert Woods is another rookie who is performing at a veteran level at this young stage of his career; he continued to make big plays for his team and find ways to get open. Stevie Johnson had a big game, eclipsing the 100 yard mark and catching the game winning TD.

The defense continued to find ways to pressure Cam Newton, particularly Mario Williams who set a team record with 4.5 sacks. The DBs held their own once again despite the absence of Stephon Gilmore and Jairus Byrd.

The Bills went a long way in this game towards turning around the culture. This young team needs to learn how to win and they came a long way in that regard this past week.

Looking Ahead

The Bills get their first taste of the road as they travel to New Jersey to take on the New York Jets? (Question mark intentional) The Jets have won 6 of 7 against the Bills but this is a different Bills team.

The Bills offense is well versed in the defense they will be facing this week as they practice against a similar style every day. The matchup to watch is The Jets #5 ranked run defense against The Bills #4 ranked rushing offense. Nathaniel Hackett has found a great balance between CJ Spiller and Fred Jackson and that may be the key to gaining yards on the ground this week.

The ground game won’t come easy and maybe this is the week that we see CJ Spiller and Fred Jackson on the field at the same time. I will continue to call for that until we see it.

EJ Manuel will have his work cut out for him facing the 6th ranked pass defense. Even with the loss of Revis, the Jets still boast two of the league’s better CBs in Antonio Cromartie and Kyle Wilson. EJ will go through some growing pains in his rookie season and this might certainly be his toughest challenge to date.

Just as the Bills are familiar with the Jets style of defense, the same can be said for the Jets offense being prepared for the Bills defense. The problem is the Jets offense lacks talent. I do not believe that the Jets have enough talent on the offensive side of the ball to score points against the Bills. That is where this game will be won.

Prediction: The Bills defense rolls in Pettine’s first game against his former team and their offense does enough to win.

Bills 20 – Jets 10
