Why the Bills SHOULD NOT pursue Michael Vick

This is the second of two blog posts that looks at the pros and cons of the Bills bringing in Michael Vick for the 2013 season.

After this past Sunday’s game, we all can put a can on the Buffalo Bills 2012 season. With that come the talks and possibilities of bringing in Michael Vick who will be a free agent at the end of the 2012-13 season. Many believe that Buffalo will be a great landing spot for Vick since he was originally pursued by the Bills before he signed with Philadelphia.

So let all the talk begin… I personally feel that if the Bills were to sign Vick it would be a big mistake and a step in the wrong direction. Hear me out on this before you jump the gun and say I’m wrong. The first thing I did before I came to this decision was take a look at the stats of Vick and our current quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick. I went back two full seasons and through nine games this season because of Vick’s injury; this is relevant because that’s when Fitz became the true starter here in Buffalo.

As you look at these stats between the two quarterbacks they are considerably close in completion percentage, yards and fumbles lost. The two categories that are different are touchdowns and interceptions. Fitzpatrick has fourteen more touchdowns than Vick but Michael has nineteen less interceptions. Turnovers are crucial in the NFL and aren’t to be taken lightly. The win-loss of each of the teams is something to look at as well.

The Eagles as a team had eight more wins than the Bills in that span but Vick also missed seven of those games. So what does all this mean, it shows that Vick is injury prone because of his style of play at the quarterback position. They only made the playoffs the first season he was there as a starter and his numbers have gone down since, that’s not to say that Fitzpatrick has been a Pro Bowl quarterback, nor am I condoning he’s our future, but looking at these stats it seems to me like it’s probably not worth the risk for Vick.

The only reason I could see them nabbing Vick is because of the “Vick Factor.” This is the money making portion of football, yes he sells tickets because he is flashy and exciting to watch. But my question is to you Bills fans, do you want exciting to watch or do you want a winning football team that makes the playoffs! I say draft a quarterback in the draft (i.e. Landry Jones) and slowly work him into our system and hopefully, and I do say hopefully, we get back to winning ways.
