Editor’s note: Please welcome Brian Quinlan, the newest blogger at BillsMafia.com. A fantasy pundit on Twitter and avid Bills fan, Brian brings a passion for the team and great mind for statistics analysis.
First let me say I’ve watched the movement on Twitter and love the enthusiasm shown by everyone. I’ll give you a quick rundown of who I am before I get to this week’s Bills game. I am the rare Bills fan that grew up down south and has yet to make a home game, this will be rectified as soon as I get some extra cash and a prescription for Valium… I hate flying as much as Rex Ryan loves feet. The long and short of how I came to root for the Red White and Blue of the Bills boils down to all my family coming from New York coupled with the timing of growing up watching the K-Gun in action on offense and Bruce Smith and company of defense. How could I not become a fan? Sure the last decade has been rough, but only little girls and guys who wax bail out on their team.
I will warn those who don’t want to hear anything negative about the team that you are not going to get fluff from me. I’m hear to give the truth the whole truth and nothing but the truth, at least according to me. Feel free to comment good, bad or indifferent. Now on to the game.
In case it wasn’t already evident life without Fred Jackson is not going to be easy for Buffalo. He is clearly the best, some might say only, every down back the Bills have on the roster. I would like to see if they give the rookie, White, some carries this week as I don’t think Spiller’s 2.9 ypc last week was enough to earn him the job outright. The good news is the Titans are a soft defense against the run, they haven’t held a team under 100 yards rushing since week 4 against the Browns, so he should find some more success this week than he did last.
When discussing the offense this year you will find a reoccurring theme in everything I write regarding the Bills… protect Fitzpatrick. The return of Hairston this week should help the Bills offensive line which is great cause they will probably end up throwing the ball 40+ times to win this game. It was nice to see Stevie rack up 13 targets last week while getting the better of Revis, I am choosing to forget the costly drops as I hope that he has learned his lesson on the cost of losing focus. I also think David Nelson will present matchup problems with his size. He’s got almost half a foot on the Titans starting group of DBs.
Establishing the pass is the key to the game for Buffalo and if they can do that early they should be able to run effectively enough to keep Tennessee from completely selling out on the blitz. Quick, precise routes and accurate throws from Fitz should keep the chains moving and that is what the Bills must focus on. Big plays are for teams that have a good enough defense to shut opponents out, and sadly the Bills are not that defense this year.
The Bills defense has got to solve the riddle of how to get to the damn QB. The pass rush is pathetic, 16 sacks in 11 games 9 of which came in the game against the Redskins. This will be a key for Buffalo, as I think we can all admit they won’t be able to stop the run unless the 12 carry for 13 yard Chris Johnson shows up, I doubt it.
The Bills are +6 in takeaways at home and they are going to have to continue that trend this weekend.
The losing streak ends this week as the Bills circle the wagons and watch the Titans die of dysentery.
Buffalo 24 Tennessee 20
